The Isetta is a microcar manufactured by several companies, including BMW,
between 1953 and 1964. Of Italian design, the Isetta has some unique features:
- a single door that
encompasses the front of the car,
- a steering column
that pivots with the door for easy entry and exit,
- rear wheels spaced
only 16 in apart (no differential) compared to 44 in for the front wheels,
- a 4-speed
transmission directed by a shift lever on the left-hand side of the driver,
- the small size and
weight of the car (about 4.5 ft wide, 7.5 ft long, and 800 lbs), and
- the classic,
bubble appearance.
