whirlingpool music started in 1991 in order to release electronic music friends and I made. Previously, I had a cassette label in New Mexico called 'aural mural music' that met with some success with several releases including a compilation tape of New Mexico music called 'adobe'. After moving to Austin, I wanted a new name for the label: something with local flavor (and a little less haughty). The week I moved to Austin was one of the wettest on record and all the creeks were flowing like a wazoo. The local news one night reported on a guy who had been sucked down a whirlpool in a creek. Apparently, he and his friend were walking along a trail, noticed a big 'ole whirl pool, and started throwing sticks into it to see how strong it was. Not satisfied with this test, one of the them waded out to the thing and was promptly sucked into the underlying cave. The whirlpool, by the way, was very impressive pulling air several feet into the water and into a crevasse in the creekbed, so this guy was a dimwit for getting in. Anyway, the local media were there with a large collection of rescue personnel marveling at the swirling vortex of water. One official-looking fellow stated that the chances were slim that the wading-dude was alive. However, because the whirlpool was sucking air, he might be in an air pocket and alive. Next, the news crew shows rescue personnel standing by the whirling water, oooing and ahhing. For the benefit of the news camera, they chucked in a big stump ("about the size a small child") to demonstrate the strength of the swirling water. A chaser of half-filled milk jugs followed the stump into the crevasse. The authorities wound up damming the creek and pulling the fellow's dead body out of the crevasse several feet below land surface. To this day I picture him holding on, a pocket of air, hearing sirens and then: WHUMP! getting the b'jeebers knocked out of him a the stump and a few milk jugs. So there you have it: natural selection at work and the name for an inconsequential record label: whirlingpool.
